Mary's Sweet & Sour Orange Sauce

Never buy bottled sweet and sour sauce again.  Mary's Sweet & Sour Orange Sauce is not only easy to make, it's delicious to the taste buds as well.  Yum.  With just a few simple ingredients, this sauce comes together in just minutes; almost as fast as opening a jar of supermarket sauce and heating it.

I should have really named this post "Mary's FAMOUS Sweet & Sour Orange Sauce" because Hedley has been bragging about this Orange Sauce for years.  Hedley is Don's brother and Mary is his wife, my sister-in-law.  Why I never asked for the recipe years ago is beyond my comprehension!  What a tasty treasure this has turned out to be.  I've made it twice in the past week and each time it has been lickably delicious.  I believe Mary has put the bottled sauce out of business in this house!

You probably have all the ingredients in your cupboards and refrigerator for this tasty little sauce.  Don't hesitate to try it the next time you are in need of a sauce for one of your meals.  You'll be glad you did.

Mary’s Sweet and Sour Orange Sauce
½ cup white vinegar
1 cup orange juice
1 cup water
½ cup sugar
½ cup ketchup

2 tablespoon cornstarch*
4 tablespoons water

Mix the vinegar, orange juice, water, sugar and ketchup in a medium sized saucepan. Set the pan over medium high heat and bring to a slow boil.

Mix the cornstarch and water together until no lumps remain.  Add the cornstarch to the boiling liquid, stirring constantly until mixture thickens.  Cook for one minute.  Remove from heat and serve with your favourite Tofu Balls or Veggie Meatballs or whatever you want with sweet and sour sauce.

Makes just over 3 cups of sauce.  For a smaller recipe half all ingredients.

*For a thicker sauce use 3 tablespoons cornstarch.

Orange juice, water, vinegar, ketchup and sugar can be found in most cupboards and refrigerators.  No special ingredients to look for when shopping.

Bring the liquid ingredients and sugar to a boil.

Add water to the cornstarch and stir to dissolve any lumps.

Whisk the cornstarch slurry into the boiling liquid and stir until thickened.

Let the sauce slowly boil for an additional minute to make sure the cornstarch is fully cooked.  Give it an occasional stir.

And that's it.  The sauce is ready to serve.
Pour it over your food or use it as a dipping sauce.

Sweet & Sour Orange Sauce is perfect for dipping veggie "chicken" strips.

Dip right in.

  4. We make egg rolls at least once a month and have tried several sweet and sour sauces. I didn't have pineapple today, so I came across your recipe today. The whole family said it was by far their favorite (and my 8 year old was even licking plain sauce up 😂). I was initially a bit concerned about the amount of vinegar, but it was perfect! Highly, highly recommend this recipe (and exactly as it :-) )

    1. The sauce is thickened with cornstarch which does not freeze well. I would make a fresh batch when needed. Glad you liked the sauce.
